Wandering, exploring, discovering...

Derinkuyu: The underground city

At the time I thought it was a bit of a mission to get to Derinkuyu and wondered if it was worth the effort.  In retrospect though it was pretty straight-forward. First we had to take the bus from the bus station in Goreme to Nevşehir then change for the bus to Derinkuyu. The concierge in our hotel actually recommended we check out the underground city in Kaymakli but by the time we were on the bus we were sort of lost and flustered and were getting different messages from the different people and so, in the end, decided just to follow the other tourists to the end of the line and instead check out the underground city in Derinkuyu.Derinkuyu Underground City, Cappadocia, Turkey

The trip took about an hour each way taking in consideration bus changes and cost us all of ten dollars.Derinkuyu Underground City, Cappadocia, Turkey

The entry to the underground city is pretty easy to find – it’s just past the church and across the big scare (mind the rabid dogs). Entry to Yeraltı Şehri was a $7 and while there wasn’t a great deal to see inside, the depth and distance of the tunnels running below the ground was pretty impressive.Derinkuyu Underground City, Cappadocia, Turkey

We spent about an hour exploring the cold, damp tunnels, before heading back up to the land of living and investigating transport back to Goreme. The bus back was as simple as the bus there – if we can do it, anyone can.    Derinkuyu Underground City, Cappadocia, Turkey Derinkuyu Underground City, Cappadocia, Turkey
