How to get to the Coconut Wells north of Broome

Known as Goolarabooloo Millibinyarri in the local Aboriginal language, the Coconet Wells are a series of small rock pools fed by the famous Kimberley Tides just north of Broome.

When the tides are high, the water flows over the sand dune and into the lagoon.

That’s when locals head up from Broome to float the day away.

The Coconut Wells about 25 kilometres north of Broome.

It’s an easy 20 minute drive along a sealed road.

Despite having visited the pools previously, we made the rookie error of selecting Coconut Well Road into Google Map that leads you further up the highway, to a non-existent turnoff.

The Internet in WA is pretty sparse at the best of times, so luckily I still had the super helpful guide on Tessomewhere open in my browser.

Armed with that information we were able to work out how to turn around and where to find the correct turnoff.

It’s actually pretty easy once you know how.

Basically:

Leaving Broome you want to take the Broome Highway.

Turn left at Broome-Cape Leveque Road.

From there it’s the first left (or right in our cause, because we were backtracking) on to McGuigan Road.

Before long Mcguigan Road becomes Lawrence Road and after a short while there’s a left hand turn – Denman Road. It’s only a short drive until you come across a bit of a car park

The Blue lagoon (if the tides are up) is right there, adjacent to the carpark. The wells are about a fifteen minute walk away, along the beach and to the north.

A pro tip is to pre plan and organise some sort of footwear – the rocks around the coconut wells are sharp and jagged and make for tough walking.
